Headlining Chico Performances‘ 21st annual Chico World Music Festival is Funkadesi, a fusion music group that has won multiple ensemble awards and received praise from President Barack Obama. The group will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12 at Laxson Auditorium.
Funkadesi combines the musical styles of reggae, funk, hip-hop and blues. The band also features members from from Kenya to India.
Funkadesi’s founder and sitar player Rahul Sharma said that audiences can expect “absolute sheer fun, joy and funkiness” from the band’s performance.
“Many people wonder what is going to happen on stage,” he said. “They’ll see turbans and they’ll see dreadlocks. We have all these different people from all these different backgrounds.”
When he founded the group 18 years ago, it was mainly about bringing cultures together, Sharma said.
“We are super excited about the show and bringing people together,” he said. “We hope people feel that.”
