The National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China’s show “Cirque Peking” was inspired by the troupe’s mascot, said Zhou Zhongtao, troupe director.
“(The) mascot of our troupe is a phoenix,” Zhongtao said. “Bird in search of light.”
The troupe, one of the most acclaimed acrobatic troupes in China, has performed in over 70 countries and will perform at 7:30 p.m.Tuesday, Sept. 16 in the Laxson Auditorium.
The show, presented by Chico Performances, will feature acrobatics, juggling, aerial work, dance and traditional Chinese music.
The troupe has also included “silk” acts, original group numbers involving silk and a trapeze, to substitute for the aerial limitations in most U.S. theaters. In 2008, the troupe received the Silver Clown Award at the 32nd Monte Carlo International Circus Festival for its “silk” act.
“Our best asset is our acrobats, and their performance is amazing,” Zhongtao said.
