Mashed potatoes, squash and all things pumpkin come to mind when thinking of fall foods. Even though most restaurants don’t have a specific fall menu, local produce or seasonal items can be added.

Here are The Orion’s picks for the best fall-themed dishes you can get in Chico.

Mom’s: The Fuji Apple Salad contains candied walnuts, Fuji apples and dried cranberries over mixed greens with two types of cheeses. Cranberries are harvested in the fall and contain phytochemicals, which have the potential to positively effect diseases like cancer.

The Graduate: The Reuben sandwich is composed of hot pastrami, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese on rye bread with Thousand Island dressing. This sandwich is great for the fall weather, since it is warm. Sauerkraut is fermented, so it contains probiotics and produces live bacteria and cultures that may be good for your immune system.

Sipho’s Restaurant and Cafe: The Ital Stew contains pumpkin. Need I say more? This stew is a mixture of Irish potatoes, carrots, turnips, beans, coconut milk and cho-cho, which is similar to squash. Full of flavor and warmth, this dish is a must try this fall.

100th Monkey Cafe & Books: The Chico Harvest Salad incorporates locally grown produce such as tomatoes, cucumbers and red onions. Meat or cheese can also be added to this veggie dish.

Upper Crust Bakery: Upper Crust Bakery actually has its own fall menu. You can order a variety of fall soups, such as Spicy Singapore Chicken and Vegetable Barley. After lunch, you can pick from a variety of fall treats from its bakery section.
