The Chico State women’s soccer team had their hands full Thursday
in a double overtime thriller at UC San Diego.
Chico State came out firing on all cylinders, attempting five shots in the first half alone yet failing to capitalize on the offensive flurry.
Both teams went scoreless in the first 45 minutes of regulation.
Chico brought their best defense early as UCSD struggled to get their offense in gear. The Wildcats held them to zero field goal attempts in the first half.
But the tide turned when Kylene Hill scored UCSD’s first field goal at 35:02 of the second half and the Wildcats struggled to match their intensity.
UCSD scored their second field goal at 25:45, followed quickly by Chico State’s first point of the night by forward Scotie Walker off an assist from midfielder Megan Tabler.
The Wildcats mounted a comeback in the waning moments of the second, courtesy of a clutch, point blank goal by midfielder Hannah Halstenson that knotted the game at two goals apiece.
Both teams went scoreless in both overtime periods, despite several close calls in favor of Chico, with the game ending with a 2-2 tie.
The women’s team hopes to notch a decisive victory on Sunday when they square off against visiting Cal Poly Pomona at home. The game begins at 2 p.m.
