The Chico State Wildcats won their first game of the season against Dominican University last Saturday. After the game went into overtime, Carter Johnson, sophomore midfielder, scored the winning goal.
Starting the game in goal for the Wildcats was first-year Andrew Matthews, while sophomore Triston Montoya took over for the ‘Cats in the second half and overtime periods. Montoya recorded his first win and save of his collegiate career in the overtime win.
First Half
Most of the action was in the first half of the game when only four minutes in, Rajaee Delane, junior transfer, scored the first goal. Johnson was there to assist DeLane with the shot. Afterwards, the Wildcats earned a free kick from 40-yards out to the top of the box that missed.
Dominican University scored its first and only goal to tie the game 1-1 at 13:27. Just minutes after, there were two consecutive fouls on Chico State and senior forward Matt Hurlow received a yellow card.
Second Half
During the second half, Dominican University received a total of nine fouls. Chico State, however, outscored Dominican University 10-4.
Sophomore Sasha Peranteau received a yellow card during the second half.
The game remained tied at 1-1 and went into overtime.
Overtime
Only three minutes had passed in overtime when the ‘Cats decided to substitute DeLane for Omar Nuno, which turned out to be a great decision that won them the game. After coming back into the game, DeLane was able to assist Johnson with the game–winning goal, ending the game 2-1.
The Chico State men’s soccer team will be facing Holy Names University at home on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
