The Chico State’s
men’s soccer season came to an end in a thrilling game against UC San Diego
that needed a penalty kick shootout to decide the winner.
The game finished in the books as a draw 1-1. But the Tritons advance to the next round of the NCAA Championship Tournament after seven rounds of a penalty kick shootout where UC Davis came out the winner.
This was the fourth meeting of the season between the ’Cats and Tritons. Chico was 1-2-1 against UC San Diego.
Chico State got off to a fast start with sophomore forward Matt Hurlow scoring in the ninth minute with an assist from goalkeeper Sam Evans. It did not take long for the Tritons to answer back as Gavin Lamming scored in the 19th minute with a header from Andisheh Bagheri’s free kick.
There would be no more scoring after that. Through regulation and two overtimes, Chico State had 13 shots and UC Davis had 10.
Tyson Crim, Jordan Gorman and Jake Ward all scored for Chico State and Evans blocked two shots by the Tritons in a row. Senior Octavio Guzman had a chance to win the game for the ’Cats but his try was stopped by a miraculous block by the goalkeeper.
Three more shots were made by the Tritons with the last two deciding the game.
Chico State ends its season with an overall record of 14-2-2.
