The Butte County Air Quality Management District has promoted an air quality change for Butte County, including the Chico area.

The Check Before You Light is an advisory from Butte County Air Quality Management requesting residents within Chico city limits to voluntarily refrain from using wood-stoves and fireplaces starting Friday Dec. 7.

Chimney smoke is a key part of pollution during winter time since the microscopic smoke particles link to health risks, according to BCAQMD.

Ways to reduce smoke pollution:

  • Regularly check and clean your chimney
  • Reduce overnight fire smoldering and use an Environmental Protection Agency certified burning tool
  • Stack wood loosely in your firebox to allow air circulation
  • Use dry firewood
