Films such as “Roma,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “A Star is Born” and “Black Panther” were among the nominees for the 91st Academy Awards announced Tuesday.
Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite” lead the Oscar nominees with both films receiving 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
This year’s Oscars ceremony marks Cuarón’s second nomination for Best Director after winning the Oscar for his 2013 film, “Gravity.”
“Roma” also received nods for actors Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, as well as for Best Original Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Foreign Film, representing Mexico.
“The Favourite” saw numerous Best Actress nominations for Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone, who won Best Actress in 2017 for her performance in “La La Land.”
Spike Lee received his first ever nomination for Best Director for his film, “BlacKkKlansman.” The film also received nominations for Best Supporting Actor, for Adam Driver’s performance, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Other notable actors who received nods were Christian Bale, who portrays former Vice President Dick Cheney in “Vice,” Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga for their performances in “A Star is Born” and Rami Malek for his performance as Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs” and Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” were among those nominated for Best Animated Feature.
In the Best Original Song category, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper were nominated for the song “Shallow,” as featured in “A Star is Born.” Kendrick Lamar and SZA were also nominated for their song “All the Stars” from the film “Black Panther.” If “All the Stars” wins Best Original Song, Lamar will be the first and only rapper to win a Grammy, Pulitzer Prize and an Oscar.
As of now, the Academy has yet to find a host for this year’s ceremony. According to Variety, the Academy plans to have selected presenters introduce segments and announce awards. It will be the first awards ceremony without a host since the 61st Academy Awards in 1989.
The 91st Academy Awards ceremony will air on Sunday, Feb. 24 on ABC.
