Chico Performances presents The Manhattan Transfer, a distinguished vocal quartet known for their impressive array of styles, including: jazz, pop, doo-wop, soul and “vocalese,” a style incorporating instrumental jazz pieces that have been refreshed and given vocals.

The album “Vocalese” gained a remarkable 12 Grammy nominations when it was released in 1985, beat only by Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album for most nominations.

The Manhattan Transfer originally formed in New York City in 1969.

Tim Hauser, a former advertising executive, is the only one of the original four members that is still active in the group. He helped establish The Manhattan Transfer as a way to provide a wide range of music he felt was missing from the music scene of the day.

Now, Hauser is joined by Alan Paul, Janis Siegel and Cheryl Bentyne.

The group is currently on tour, sharing their particular musical style across the country.

Even after critical success and dozens of albums, they still enjoy the process of touring, seeing new places and meeting new people.

“I sing for free,” Hauser said. “I get paid for traveling.”
