Local Shorts<strong>Break out the brooms</strong>

With a weekend sweep of the two last place teams in the conference, Chico State men’s basketball improved its record to 10-7 overall and 7-5 in league. Friday against Cal State L.A., Scott Land drained five of nine three-point attempts to lead the Wildcats with 26 points. Land, along with Ben Perak, led Chico with seven rebounds apiece. Jason Van Eck and Daveris Hester were the other Wildcat players to reach double figures, with 11 and 12.

Saturday, against Cal State Dominguez Hills, Hester couldn’t miss. He ended 8-14 from the floor, 2-4 from three-point range and 6-6 from the line for a career high 24 points. The Wildcats also received outstanding play from the center position. Perak had 12 points, six rebounds and an assist, while Will Bonner came off the bench with 14 points and eight rebounds.<strong>Sweeping into second</strong>

Cal State L.A. and Dominguez Hills were no match for the Chico State women’s basketball team. The two-game weekend sweep upped the Wildcats record to 10-6 overall and 8-4 in conference, good for second place. Against L.A., Michelle Pietka knocked down two threes and was 8-13 from the field. She ended the game with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Leah Rice added 15 points and 15 rebounds in the 93-82 victory. Rice’s double-double was her fifth in the month of January. Chico state now has a three-game winning streak against L.A.

Saturday was another game and another double-double for Rice. Her 18 points and 10 boards helped the Wildcats defeat Dominguez Hill 67-58. The win was the eight in a row against Dominguez Hills and gave the Wildcats a three-game winning streak. Kim Abts chipped in with 16 points and seven assists.<strong>Stokx stifles Davis</strong>

Fresh off its College World Series appearance last season, softball took a three-hour trip south to Modesto to participate in the Best of the West Invitational. Saturday against UC Davis, Katie Stokx pitched all seven innings, giving up just five hits and no runs. She threw seven strikeouts in the 3-0 win. Leadoff hitter Ashley Andersen and Stokx each had two hits. Against Azusa Pacific, the Wildcats were defeated 3-1. Chico only collected four hits in the game and left five runners stranded. Chico will face Cal State Stanislaus in a doubleheader Friday. <strong>Lacrosse conquers northwest</strong>

The Chico State men’s lacrosse team dominated play against the University of Washington and the University of Oregon last weekend. Washington is ranked 23rd in the nation. Despite the high ranking, Chico came away with a win, 11-7. Rob Meinbress led the offensive charge with three goals. Against Oregon, Whit Poor scored five goals in a 10-9 victory. Men’s lacrosse is at home this weekend to welcome number-one ranked Sonoma State to Chico. The game starts at 2 p.m.Saturday.
