Editorial: Downtown lighting shows A.S. efforts

Chico recently received a grant to improve lighting in the downtown area. This comes in response to A.S. President Joseph Igbineweka’s campaign for student safety on and off campus.

A.S. will send out an online survey to students asking where they would like to see lighting improvements. The survey will help decide where to invest the limited funds.

The move for better lighting started back in June, when the newly elected officers began their terms.

Through Town and Gown Committee meetings, members of the Chico community and student representatives meet to discuss issues of common concern. A.S. officers have been doing their best to bring awareness to the need for better lighting in particular areas.

Those of you at Chico State for the A.S. elections last spring may recall Igbineweka’s campaign focused heavily on improving lighting on and off campus.

Igbineweka and the rest of A.S. deserve recognition for making the effort to keep students safe in Chico. When Igbineweka first said he would work to improve lighting off campus, we weren’t exactly sure how he would go about it. Color us pleasantly surprised.

We’d also like to show appreciation for the fulfillment of his campaign promise. In a world where politicians in high-up positions aren’t held to their word, it’s incredible to see a student official so genuine and true to his platform.

On the other side of the coin, seeing the city recognize the student voice speaks even louder. This means the students are seen as members of the community and have a right to involvement in city affairs.

As nice of a step as this is, A.S., Chico and students need to continue safety efforts. Programs like R.A.D. and Chico Safe Rides help and we could use more like them.

Students need to hold up their end of the safety bargain as well. Don’t go out alone at night and keep a rape whistle on you.

At the end of the day, it’s great to see A.S. working for students and thinking beyond the physical boundaries of the campus. This kind of thinking keeps A.S. an essential and valuable part of Chico State.

Of course, A.S. holds no direct authority over downtown, so we need to appreciate the city’s end of this good news as well.

Thanks for listening, Chico.
