Scholarship honors alumnus

A new scholarship has been made in memory of Chico State alumnus Philip Michael Batlin.

In March, Batlin was killed crossing a street in Millbrae, a Bay Area city, when a car hit him and the driver fled. Batlin received his degree in recreation and parks administration in 1997.

His friends and family have donated $19,000 to create the Philip Michael Batlin Memorial Scholarship. Awards of $1,000 will be available in fall 2005 to recreation and parks administration students based on merit and need.

Destroyed habitats on display

Two photographers, famous for capturing habitats being ruined, will visit Chico from Sept. 30 until Oct. 5.

Don Normark took photos of the Chavez Ravine community in Los Angeles for 13 years as Dodger Stadium took over beginning in 1948.

Susan Silberberg is an art historian and photographer. She has taken photos of a six-mile length of the Colorado River that may be flooded because of a dam.

Chico State and Avenue 9 Gallery worked together to bring the photographers to Chico, and their work will be on display in both locations in October.

Free soda and 50-cent coffee online

Associated Students Food Service is offering students a deal — go online and save money. Printable coupons are available at www.csuchico.edu/as/foodservices and range in value from 50 cents to $1.10. They are redeemable for discounts on coffee, ice cream, bagel spreads and soda at Creekside Coffee, Common Grounds, Bell Memorial Union Snack Cart and the Marketplace Cafe. Students can use one coupon each day until Dec. 17.

A glimpse into the real world

The biannual Career Fair is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday in the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium. More than 65 companies will be recruiting students from all majors. Companies range from Jamba Juice, which will recruit all Chico State students, to the California Franchise Tax Board, which will recruit accounting majors only. The fair is student-organized by the business fraternities Delta Sigma Pi and Phi Chi Theta with support from other campus organizations. For more information visit www.dspweb.org/careerfair.
