Student returns to country after visa delay

WASHINGTON – Georgetown doctorate student Waskar Ari went home to Bolivia in May 2005, and expected to return to the United States in the fall to take up a teaching position at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Now, more than two years later, Ari has returned to the United States after a delay of his work visa and the revoking of his student visa prompted Georgetown administrators and others from around the country to fight on his behalf.

“When he got in, I was delighted,” said Jo Ann Moran Cruz, chair of Georgetown’s history department while Ari was a student. “The academic community as a whole really stepped up to help him out.”

Online technology a debate for students

DEKALB, Ill. – For students, the Internet is starting to replace the classroom.

Thanks to the online course server of Blackboard, professors are able to post class notes and assignments for students on the Internet. The service’s impact on the instructor-student relationship is a debated topic.

Sean Woyna, a junior sociology major, said he still attends class despite notes being available on Blackboard and uses Blackboard to aid him in collecting material for class.

“Blackboard has helped me take notes because I’m not trying furiously to write down everything the teacher is saying,” Woyna said. “It allows me to take notes on the notes.”

PETA complaint leads to lab closure

STORRS, Conn. – Over an eight-year period, Dr. David Waitzman of the University of Connecticut Health Center went from receiving a $1.7 million grant from the National Eye Institute, a division of the National Institute of Health, to shutting down his lab at the urging of University of Connecticut.

Waitzman, whose research concentrated on how the brain stem controls eye movement, ran into trouble in 2004.

Then-student Justin Goodman, founder of the university’s Animal Rights Collective and research associate with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, learned of Waitzman’s research, which included alleged unauthorized experimentation involving monkeys.

Students take part in bisexuality forum

BOSTON – Some Boston University students learned Thursday night that sexuality comes in many shades of gray.

Forcing her audience to question what is considered sexually acceptable, bisexual activist Robyn Ochs asked students to rate their sexuality and was not surprised by the results: Many students could not clearly define themselves.

More than 40 Boston University students participated in Ochs’ “science experiment” at the interactive bisexual presentation.

UC Berkeley freshmen to endure egging

BERKELEY – Some UC Berkeley freshmen may be bringing an extra set of clothes to school Friday.

Some students estimate that about 100 people per year participate in Freshmen Fridays, when seniors throw eggs at new freshmen.

“It has a myth quality about it,” said senior Marshall Genn, a student representative on the School Governance Council. “It’s a tradition.”

About 30 seniors travel in groups to target about 30 freshmen each Friday, throwing eggs at them during lunch or on their way home from school.
