The Chico
State women’s basketball team
remained unbeaten Saturday after defeating the University of Tampa Spartans, 77-67.
It was the closest game of the season for the ’Cats with the 10-point victory. The previous three opponents for Chico State were all defeated by at least 24 points.
The first half was controlled by the ’Cats, who shot 53.8% from the field and 45.5% from 3-point range. Defense was the key in the first half as Chico State held the University of Tampa to only 30% shooting from the field.
The ’Cats led at halftime by the score of 40-27. But in the second half the Spartans had two runs to get closer to the ’Cats. An 11-2 run early in the second half pulled the lead to single digits as the ’Cats led 47-40. Then a 16-7 run by the Spartans later in the half brought the game within four as Chico State led 66-64.
Chico State’s Jazmine Miller answered right back with a 3-pointer to get the ’Cats back to a seven point lead. And after a few free-throws, Chico State would end the game with a victory.
Hannah Womack led Chico State with 17 points, while Analise Riezebos chipped in 14 points and Jazmine Miller had 12 points.
The ’Cats are 4-0 overall and will face 3-1 Cal State Stanislaus on Nov. 26 in Turlock.
