Josh McCollum is a junior transfer student from Creighton University who is on the Chico State men’s golf team. McCollum was recognized last week when he finished second out of 80 golfers at the Fujikura Invitationals.
The team had a strong performance as well, finishing in second place in the tournament. McCollum is looking to perfect his game for the upcoming season and work with his fellow teammates to take home the ultimate prize: The national championship.
Q: When did you start playing golf and what made you fall in love with the sport?
A: “I started playing golf about four to four and a half years ago and I fell in love with the sport based off of how it’s an individual sport and you have to rely on yourself and nobody else to help you.”
Q: After finishing in the top three of the recent tournament you played in, how does that make you feel and help you prepare for the remainder of the season?
A: “Individually, it’s a good start to the year, but in hindsight it’s about the team and us winning national championships. If I compete and play to my ability as an individual, it’s helping the team.”
Q: Who are some of your favorite professional golfers and why?
A: “I’m a fan of Tiger Woods and John Daly, John Daley has been somewhat of a mentor to me over the past couple years and helped me progress as a golfer.”
Q: What are some of your personal goals for the upcoming season?
A: “When it comes to goals, I just want to do anything I can to help the team and pursue our goal as a team to win a national championship, and that starts off with winning conference and winning regionals.”
