Chico Performances will present a night of thrilling cross-cultural music with Carlos Nunez at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Laxson Auditorium.

Nunez grew up in Galicia, in northern Spain, and began playing the Galician bagpipes at 8 years old and fell in love, he said.

Galicia has a strong Celtic history, which is reflected in his music,opposed to the flamenco style commonly found in the rest of Spain. This led to Nunez’s wide mix of styles, from his traditional Celtic origins to Latin, flamenco, Mexican, Brazilian and even classical music.

Nunez is currently on tour in the U.S. and remarks that playing in the United States is a wonderful experience, particularly due to the diverse nature of music here.

“For me, it’s a way to learn, always,” Nunez said.

His interconnected style of music is usually enjoyed here in the U.S., often more so than elsewhere in the world.

Nunez said the type of music he plays ismusic with a “message for the future.”

Attempting to bridge the gaps between cultures, various ages and interests, Nunez’s music attempts to “look for the connections” between all of us.
