The O-Face: Salutations from the sex columnist

Being Chico State’s sex columnist this semester has been challenging and wildly
fulfilling.

As I look back on my writing, I see growth both within myself as a writer and as a sexual being. Through exposing myself in my writing, I got to know a deeper level of my identity that I hadn’t accessed before.

As a sex columnist, I realized you have a duty to your readers. You become an avenue through which people can seek sexual knowledge, guidance, humility and entertainment.

The knowledge you convey comes from what you have learned through your own sexuality and have researched on the topic.

You help guide people by being in a place of authority for this aspect of people’s lives and by displaying the mistakes you have made and how to learn from them.

You show humility by exposing things in your life that are hard to admit to everyone reading. It helps you connect with your audience on a much deeper level than you could have otherwise. A level of trust is formed and a bond with the reader is created this way.

And finally, you entertain. Without looking at sexuality with a lighthearted and fun perspective, this part of life becomes a chore to get through rather than a hobby to enjoy.

I’ve tried my best to convey the messages that help make my sex life so fulfilling. This includes being comfortable with who you are as a person, expressing your sexuality freely, being accepting of the sexualities of those around you, communicating openly and taking responsibility for your sex life so that you may have the power to change it for the better.

I can only hope that these messages have resonated with my readers and have affected their lives in a positive way.

As with all things in my life, becoming a wholesome sexual person is still a work in progress. My stint as a sex columnist is coming to a close, but my sexual and personal journey is far from over.

I wholeheartedly believe that anyone can improve their sex lives. Simply act like a columnist. Do your research, read about sex and sexuality, express your desires freely and experience as much as you can.

So the way I see it is, the power is in your hands – literally.
