Humans of Chico State: Education

What issues/benefits do you feel you are receiving from your education at Chico State?

The largest problem with the education system in California is the general education. A majority of them have absolutely nothing that have to do with what I will be doing in the future with my career. On the other side, it gets us diving into interests that we wouldn’t have thought of before. For instance, right now I’m taking dance, and now it’s becoming a part of my life. I want to be a dance teacher.

How do you feel about your upper division teachers?

For the most part, they are pretty good. They are easy to relate to. They have professional experience in the field, which gives them actual examples that make it much easier to understand the subject.

How do you feel about the general education experience?

I think it was just a waste of my time and my money because nothing that I take from those classes will transfer into the real world. Forcing me to take science classes when it doesn’t have anything to do with my major doesn’t make sense to me. I get the whole point of them wanting us to be well rounded and educated, but i feel like they could go about it in a different way.

Do your general education classes relate to you and what you want to be?

I want to go into nutrition. I’m really good with biology and body stuff so I could go into sports nutrition or food management. I feel like the general education has opened up my options for what I can do with my life. For instance, I’m taking a journalism class and eventually I could be a nutrition journalist. There are many more examples that I could get into, but I could go on forever. The one class I wasn’t too fond of was history. Some of these classes are a waste of time, but a lot of them open up options for me.
