Say ‘bye bye bye’ to boy bands

When I was a kid, I was all about N Sync and the Backstreet Boys.

I had their CDs, their posters decorated my walls, and I had a huge crush on Justin Timberlake.

So when I heard that both bands were reportedly getting back together (again) to tour (again) and bring Backstreet back (alright!), you’d think I would’ve been happier than when they announced French Toast Crunch cereal was coming back.

But just like Ferbies, Tamagotchi, Myspace and crap-brown lipstick, boy bands are one of those things that should have stayed in the 90s.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good throw-back Thursday with the boys while I try to pull off scrunchies again.

Their music was fun and entertaining, but I can’t handle more than a couple of plays of those CDs before I want to return to present day.

The song lyrics are too simple and the subject matter is normally about girls, relationships and did I mention girls?

There is zero complexity to the music. It’s not thought provoking or deep.

And don’t just think that I’m hating on boy bands of the past. Even groups from the boy band revival of 2012 are the same way.

There’s nothing fresh or original about a group of boys singing about girls and relationships, both good and bad.

I know that it may be hard to hear, but let’s leave boy bands in the 90s.

I’m sorry, but I want it that way.
