Progressives gain seats on city council
The Chico City Council will remain in progressive control after the midterm election, but two close races have left seats open. After Nov. 7, progressive Tom Nickell held a 40-vote lead over conservative Mark Sorensen, and the race between Maureen Kirk and Steve Bertagna for county supervisor is separated by 234 votes.
Election officials are working to count more than 13,800 absentee ballots, provisional ballots and paper ballots by Thanksgiving, said Butte County Clerk-Recorder Candace Grubbs.
If Bertagna wins, it will be up to the city council to chose a seventh member, but if Kirk wins, the conservative Bertanga will keep his spot on the council.

Fraternities lose recognition
Two fraternities have lost recognition by Chico State’s Interfraternity Council because they failed to turn in paperwork to show they have faculty advisers, Greek adviser Larry Bassow said. As of Monday, Delta Chi and Beta Theta Pi failed to turn in paperwork, 13 weeks into the semester. This violates the regulations that Academic Senate passed in spring, which state that every fraternity has to have a faculty adviser. The presidents of both groups said they have advisers but haven’t turned in their paperwork. Until they do, they will remain unrecognized.
