Oregon State hit by registration fraud

CORVALLIS, Ore. — A group that has recently been accused of election violations in Nevada has hit Oregon State University, the OSU Daily Barometer reported.

The name of the group was not given, but elections office staff confronted group members to inform them about the Oregon voter registration law. The Daily Barometer reported that the group had a petition for students to sign that group members said was to lower car insurance for young people.

Students were to sign their names and phone numbers and then given a form to verify voter registration. OSU senior Brandy Martinez realized it was a voter registration form with the title obscured, the Barometer reported. When the petitioner told Martinez she needed to mark “Republican” because they were funding the petition, the student refused and called the Benton County elections office.

San Diego’s ‘house party’ ban tossed

LA JOLLA, Calif. — The San Diego Superior Court’s Appellate Division struck the city’s Social Host Ordinance, also known as the “house party” ordinance, on Oct. 7. The court ruled that it was unconstitutionally broad, the Guardian reported.

The City Council voted unanimously in favor of the ordinance in March 2003 in an effort to stop underage drinking by making it illegal for hosts to supply alcohol to minors. Violators would face up to $1,000 in fines and six months in jail. The appellate court rejected the law because it lacked specifics about what was a violation.

Lawmakers wanted it to be revised. Supporters of the ordinance say that it helped law enforcement control parties and by passing the law, those hosting underage drinkers would be penalized. Opponents of the bill said that it should be the individuals’ decision whether they want to drink. The city is planning to appeal the decision.

Chris Duree, 21, was taken to UCI Medical Center after he was shot in the chest. He was reported to be in critical but stable condition, according to the Daily Titan. University and Fullerton Police are investigating the shooting, but no suspects have been named.
