Sergio Sanchez was one of twelve political science scholars selected nationally this year for a fellowship stipend from the American Political Science Association's Minority Fellows program.

A faculty member at Chico State has received a fellowship from the American Political Science Association to pursue doctoral studies.

Sergio Sanchez, a political science lecturer, will be awarded $4,000 through the association’s Minority Fellows Program, according to a university press release. Sanchez earned his master’s degree in political science from Chico State in May.

Sanchez, who has 11 years of experience with federal and military services, teaches courses on American government and political inquiry, according to the release. His academic focus is international relations in regards to security studies.

“As a second-generation Mexican American, I am eternally grateful to my family, who abandoned their lives in Mexico and moved to the United States in order to ensure a better life for their children,” said Sanchez in the press release. “I am happy to make my family proud, while at the same time happy to share my knowledge and encourage others from all ethnicities to seek not only self-improvement, but help make our world a better place.”

The program was established in 1969 to increase the prevalence of minority scholars in the field of political science, according to the association’s website. Over 100 recipients have earned doctoral degrees through contributions from the fellowship since its inception.
