A Chico man was robbed at gunpoint near Panama Avenue and The Esplanade on Nov. 29.

Police received a call about a possible armed robbery and a victim who was bleeding from a laceration on his head, according to a Chico police press release.

Justin Martinez informed police that a suspect approached him and tried to take his backpack before pulling out a semi-automatic handgun and striking Martinez in the head with it. The suspect, later determined to be Eric L. Gaines, was then said to have demanded money from Martinez. After receiving the money, Gaines fled on his bike.

Officers searched the area before spotting Gaines near the Fairview High campus. He went westbound on East Avenue before eventually being arrested near an Arco gas station on East Avenue and The Esplanade.

Gaines was booked for armed robbery.

Martinez was not seriously injured during the incident and received medical attention before being released.
