The Chico State softball team was able to claw one win out of the four game series with the No. 1 ranked Humboldt State Jacks. Sunday, the team split the doubleheader while it had the offense on full throttle, finishing the day with a 8-7 win and a 11-8 loss.

Early Sunday morning, the Wildcats offense led the team to victory after being down by four runs early. With the score 5-2, and the Jacks leading in the bottom of the third, Molina took the lead with a swing of the bat with a grand slam, making the score 6-5.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Jacks swatted a two-run home run to retake the lead 7-6. Chico State then came back in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run by Desireè Gonzales to take the lead 8-7 and hold on for the win.

Over the course of Sunday, Chico State had more home runs than it had all season, with four. Molina had one previous hit on the season, before knocking a grand slam in the first game.

The second contest started quickly as Sammi Ridgway hit a leadoff solo home run to start the game. Up by one in the top of the second, Amanda Cordeiro matched Ridgway’s solo homer with one of her own, putting the Wildcats up 2-0.

A back and fourth second game that had six lead changes was capped by a two run sixth inning by Chico State to grab the lead 8-6. Then only to have the lead squandered when the Jacks came back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.

Gonzales and Cordeiro both had three runs batted in over the two game set. Cordeiro also continued her hot streak keeping her batting average at a high .415 with three hits on the day.

The Wildcats are now 7-10 overall and 5-7 in conference play. The next game will be at home Friday at noon against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
