Chico State men’s soccer team beats Humboldt State 1-0

The Chico State Men’s soccer team took on Humboldt State on Sept. 25, looking to capitalize on a two-game winning streak and win its first conference game. The game ended 1-0 with a win for the Wildcats.

The ‘Cats were fired up from the start, with Matt Hurlow leading the charge by scoring from a penalty kick in the 14th minute. Hurlow ended up taking five shots in total, with three shots on goal.

Chico State’s relentless offensive strategy helped it claim the victory over Humboldt State. Chico State took 11 shots in the game, with seven shots on goal, compared to Humboldt State’s 5 shots, with only 2 on goal.

Both teams played an aggressive game, with Chico State totaling 14 fouls and Humboldt with 12. During the second half of play, a fight broke out after a pass was intercepted, resulting in Humboldt’s Griffin Braxton receiving a red card.

Jesus Ramos and Matthew Tarr received yellow cards in the game for Chico State. The Jacks received 12 corner kicks due to fouls, compared to Chico State’s four, but were unable to score off their efforts.

Despite the loss, Humboldt State goalie Christopher Cherms kept the game close, ending with six saves in the game. Chico State goalie Triston Montoya also came away with two saves, helping propel the ‘Cats over the Jacks.

Chico State will play against Sonoma State on Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. at Ronhert Park and will be looking to add on to their three-game winning streak.
