Jazz is still alive and kickin’. One of the genre’s most renowned groups, The Hot Sardines, will take music from the ’20s, ’30s and ’40s and add a contemporary twist for its show at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at Laxson Auditorium.

Chico is one of the many stops on the New York-based group’s first major tour across the country.

The Hot Sardines, led by pianist Evan Palazzo, is known for its energetic performances. The band’s style of uptempo rhythms and improvisational jams are the basis of its unique name.

“Best thing about performances is the energy of the music, the joy it brings and the audience itself,” Palazzo said. “It’s enjoyable.”

The Hot Sardines will be performing music off its latest self-titled LP released earlier this month. However, fans can also look forward to some older hits.

“Half of the material will be from our new album and the other half will be from our old repertoire,” Palazzo said. “We like to have surprises and we’ll even change up the set list in the middle of the show.”

Chico jazz enthusiasts can look forward to a night of an infectious, hip-swinging groove as The Hot Sardines bring more than just music.

“We have some tap dancing incorporated into the show to keep our performance live,” Palazzo said. “The audience can look forward to a high-energy show with us on.”
