‘Cats crash in conference contest

Another day, another heartbreak.

The Chico State men’s soccer team lost a brutal 2-1 overtime game Friday against UC San Diego in the semifinals of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament.

The Wildcats had high hopes for the tournament after a strong regular season and drew first blood with a fourth minute goal by junior Adam Black. Black drilled a shot home from 10 yards out, with the assist coming from senior forward Luis Martinez.

Elan Gefen tied the score soon after halftime in the 50th minute for UC San Diego with a shot into the bottom left corner. Both defenses stuffed opposing offensive attacks for the remainder of the game, sending the semifinal into overtime.

Only two minutes into extra time, Malek Bashti scored the winner for UC San Deigo, ending Chico State’s hopes of winning the coveted title.

The ‘Cats will play a game of sit-and-wait until they find out whether their season is over, or if they move on to the West Regionals Nov. 14.
