Rape reported at Kappa Sigma fraternity
On Super Bowl Sunday, a person reported a rape at the Kappa Sigma Fraternity house on W. Fifth Street.
The incident took place on Feb. 5 around 3 p.m., according to the University Police report.
University Police Chief John Feeney sent out a campus-wide email alerting students of the rape that occurred in accordance to the Jeanne Clery Act.
Campus authorities stated that the suspect’s identity is known. No known arrests have been made.

Journalists are supposed to stay neutral and report accusations as just that until proven in a court of law. You seem to understand that at the beginning when you write “a person reported a rape”
Later however your write, “the rape that occurred.”
Just so you know, you would get in trouble for doing this working for a professional news organization. It is important to remain unbiased and remember to use words like “allegedly.”

I am confused as to why the article is being claimed as at a rape at the Kappa Sigma fraternity house when the police report identifies the location as the 700 block of West 5th Street (which does, in fact, include the fraternity house). While I understand that using a large contributor to the greek community’s name, such as Kappa Sigma, tends to draw more headlines, I do not agree with the slander you have put a nationally established fraternity’s name through because of your incomplete, reiteration of a terrible incident. Let me be clear that I 100% believe this girls’ story and would never claim her to be a liar, but I do feel that the Orion has produced a half-assed story lacking any concrete evidence. I feel strongly that independent new sources should be reporting on major issues such as sexual assault allegations, but please, this is not reporting. This is posting a biased, incomplete headline to create outrage in the Chico State community and bring attention to the Orion once again. Please do report the ENTIRE story when you’ve done more research. I would enjoy to know the identity of the suspect, the charges he possibly faces, the accurate location of the crime (not just the closest major landmark), and an actual analysis about the police report (not just a screenshot of the police departments’ media log). Thanks.

Hi everyone-
Please check out the police report, Not the map. If you go onto the website and click on the link “daily crime”, you can see the report there.
Thanks

The crime map only shows one crime even near the Kappa Sigma house, and it indicates a bike stop, not a sexual assault. Not denying where it happened, but just wondering where the vaild sources are?

You have to click the “Crime” tab on the left side of the screen. It is preset to “Past Activity” which only has little minor reports as you saw.
