Crazy sixes

At the cross-country NCAA Championships Saturday in Spokane, Wash., Chico State’s men’s and women’s cross-country teams finished sixth place in the nation.

While both squads had extremely high goals and eyed a National Championship, a sixth place finish is a strong end to a fantastic season. Additionally, senior Isaac Chavez finished eighth overall and earned All-America honors, along with Johnny Sanchez who finished 23rd and Ayla Granados who finished 26th in the women’s race.

The season was yet another dominant one for the legacy that is Chico State cross-country. The men’s team has finished in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships for 15 consecutive years, while the women’s team has earned the same feat for 12 years.

Sara Mikesell, a senior who finished 45th overall Saturday, said the team result was solid.

“It was a tough race and we raced hard out there,” Mikesell said, “Anytime you can be within the top 10 at the NCAA Championships, it’s a solid day at the office.”
