Chico police officers were dispatched Sunday to an emergency situation near Eaton Road Overpass and Highway 99.
At about 8:18 p.m., police arrived at the highway overpass to prevent a woman from attempting to jump into oncoming freeway traffic, according to a press release.
Police officers, including Officer Damon Selland, negotiated with the woman to persuade her not to jump from the overpass, according to police. Family members were also located to assist with negotiation and prevent the woman from losing her grip.
California Highway Patrol officers, Chico Fire and Butte County Emergency Medical Services shut down the northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 99, diverting traffic to East Avenue and Garner Road.
After over 35 minutes, negotiations with the woman succeeded and she was transported to Enloe Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
The incident lasted for about 90 minutes in total and the northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 99 were then re-opened.
