Faces in the Crowd: Alumnus supports daughter at stadium

Sometimes you meet ordinary people at a sporting event, other times you may come across a Chico State record holder in the stands.

Tom Moss, 48, was a conference Pitcher of the Year for the 1987 Wildcats baseball team. Moss is a Chico State alumnus and attends the track and field meets at University Stadium.

His daughter, who attends Butte College, was participating in the Wildcat Invitational track meet March 15 as a heptathlete. Moss goes to all the meets in Chico, rain or shine, he said.

“For a career I am an agriculture biologist, and I am out here watching one of the three track meets out here at Chico,” Moss said. “The first meet it was raining so it is nice to come out on a beautiful day like today.”

Moss pitched for the Wildcats in 1987 and 1988 and still holds the records for most wins in a season, with 14, and also most complete games in a career, with 19.

“Having guys throw complete games is very uncommon these days, due to coaches pulling out pitchers after they struggle,” Moss said. “Back when I played, lots of guys would throw them.”

Moss chose agriculture biology as a profession, but switched majors and went to a sports academy along the way, before earning his degree in 1997, he said.

“I graduated in 1997, and that might be confusing, but I changed majors,” he said. “I got a lot of units and a lot of time here. It’s great to come out and support the school I went to.”
