Cross country dominates at NCAA West Regional Championships

NCAA West Regional Highlights

  • Johnny Sanchez is the fifth runner in Chico State history to earn four All-West Region awards.
  • True freshmen Camila Turati earned All-West Region.
  • True freshmen Alexandra Burkhart earned All-West Region.
  • Both Wildcat teams were ranked fourth in the nation heading into today’s race.

The team will now have to look forward to its last meet of the season, the NCAA championships, on December 6th in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Chico State men’s cross country team won its third straight NCAA West Regional Championship, while the women’s team came in second.

The men’s team had six cross the finish line in the top 10. Johnny Sanchez was the fourth runner to cross and the first Wildcat. After Sanchez crossed the finish line five Wildcats would be right behind him. The men claimed their 11th regional title in 13 years.

Other pack members included freshman Kyle Medina and sophomores Nick Grubiss and Aaron Mora. Past California Collegiate Athletic Association runner of the week, Alex McGuirk was also included in the mix.

The women’s team came in second losing to Simon Fraser but are going to the Division II Championships for the 14th year in a row.

Enriquetta Peinado was the first Wildcat to cross and she place 11th. Camila Turati, a freshman, came in as the second Wildcat in 18th place. Alex Burkhart and Sadie Gastelum came in 22nd and 24th respectively out of 167 runners.

Chico State will head to the NCAA Division II Championships, which takes place in Louisville on Dec. 6th.
