The Chico State women’s basketball team traveled south on Friday night to Rohnert Park, defeating Sonoma State 56-51 in the Wolves’ Den.

The win ended Chico’s three-game losing streak and got their last road trip of the season off to the right start.

With the win, the ‘Cats improved to 9-14 on the season and 6-13 in conference play in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Chico State was led offensively by senior guard Hannah Womack, who finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Freshman Whitney Branham chipped in 12 points, while senior Annie Ward also hit double digits, finishing with 10.

Sophomore forward Ashtyn Anderson finished her night with nine points and eight rebounds.

The ‘Cats took a 31-22 lead into the locker room at the half, only to see Sonoma’s offense pick up to start the second half. The Wolves used a 15-2 run to take a brief 38-37 lead with 11:53 remaining.

Five straight points from Anderson on a jumper and three-point play gave the ‘Cats the lead back at 41-37 with 10:46 left in the game. A lead that Chico would not relinquish again.

Sonoma closed to within four with one minute left, but Branham and Womack combined to go 5-6 from the free throw line and keep the lead with Chico and come away with the win.

Chico State will play its final road game of the season on Saturday, when they travel to the bay area to take on San Francisco State.
