Police officer assaulted by DUI suspect

Police officer assaulted by DUI suspect

A DUI suspect, identified as Drew Thomas-Del Grande, was taken into custody Sunday night after assaulting a police officer.

According to a news release, the Chico Police first received a call about Grande Sunday night at 7:50 p.m., after he crashed his vehicle into a tree in front of the caller’s residence on the 300 block of Hazel St.

A second caller notified police that Grande appeared to be intoxicated and was attempting to fight witnesses at the scene. Several witnesses were holding Grande to the ground when an officer arrived at the scene according to the release from police.

When the officer attempted to detain Grande, he fought back and punched the officer in the head. Other officers had to help take Grande to the ground and detain him after he resisted arrest.

Grande was arrested on multiple charges, including battery on a police officer with injury, resisting arrest by violence, and driving under the influence.

According to Chico Police, Grande was taken to Enloe Medical Center following his arrest and medically cleared shortly thereafter. He is currently being held at the Butte County Jail with a bail amount of $60,000.
