Chico State men’s soccer team had strong defense in their game on Sept. 8 against the Point Loma Sea Lions. The teams ended up in double overtime but neither scored at all.

The ‘Cats junior goalkeeper Damion Lewis lead the team’s defensive effort with four saves in the game. Lewis has allowed three goals this season and made a total of eight saves.

Chico State gained control of the ball early. The team had seven fouls in the first half of the game and were forced to forfeit their early possessions. Both teams had four shot attempts in the first half but failed to take advantage of their opportunities.

The Sea Lions increased their offensive presence in the second half by taking 11 shots. Chico State also improved their offensive tactic in the second half. The team took seven shots and forced Point Loma to make six saves.

Both teams received yellow cards in the second half of the game because of the aggressive play. Junior midfielder Carter Johnson performed an illegal slide tackle and earned his first yellow card of the season toward the end of the second half.

Chico State focused heavily on defense during the overtime period, taking just one shot in the additional 30 minutes. Neither team took advantage of the extra time. The ‘Cats forced a tie and extended their overall record to 1-1-1.

Chico State will end their preseason matches with their next game on Sept. 10 against the Cal Baptist Lancers.
