Chico State women’s soccer took on the Holy Names University Hawks on Sept. 9, at the ‘Cats home field. Chico State won 2-0 and prevented the Hawks from making any shots throughout the game.

The ‘Cats gained control of the ball early in the first half and kept possession of it throughout the game. Chico State took 11 shots in the first half and forced the Hawks to make two narrow saves within 10 minutes of each other.

Senior Shelby Lanksbury led the ‘Cats offense in the first half by scoring the first goal of the game for the Wildcats. The goal was her second of the season and ninth of her collegiate career.

The Hawks took control of the ball in the second half, but Chico State’s defense met them with resistance and forced the Hawks to forfeit their possession after a foul. The ‘Cats took a strong offensive tactic in the second half, by attempting 10 shots in the first 15 minutes of the game.

Junior midfielder Courtney Sharrah scored the second goal of the game for the ‘Cats at the 17-minute mark, her first of the season and collegiate career. Sharrah shot the unassisted goal from 30 yards away. It barely made it into the left corner of the net.

Chico State took a total of 35 shots in the game but had just seven shots on goal. Despite the lack of quality shots, the ‘Cats overwhelming offense prevented the Hawks from attempting any shots in the game.

Chico State will return to the field Sept. 11, against the Academy of Art on the ‘Cats home field.
