Karla Camacho, AS director of university affairs, was surprised on Sunday with a prestigious award.

The California State Student Association’s Shaun R. Lumachi student advocate of the year award was awarded to Camacho for her work encouraging campuses tp show support for DACA students, as well as helping to organize Cal State contact congress and many other projects.

“I had no idea,” Camacho said, “I had a few people in my mind that I thought would win. I was very surprised when I heard Chico State (announced). Then I realized it was my name, and I had to remind myself not to cry.”

The award was presented at the California higher education summit in Sacramento, where Camacho and other student leaders across the state showed up to lobby against tuition increases to state legislators.

“You never realize how much impact your work has had. I feel truly honored,” Camacho said.
