Chico State drops two against San Francisco State

Chico State’s baseball team took on San Fransisco State at Nettleton Stadium, as the road team in their home park. That was just one of many oddities that took place in this series.

These games originally slated for earlier in the weekend but rain delays pushed the series to Chico in a doubleheader on Sunday. Two games and two failed comebacks for the Wildcats push them to 4-5 overall and 0-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Game 1:

This game began with two runs by the Wildcats after a Turner Olson walk and a throwing error by the Gators allowed Brandon Hernandez to score in the first inning. The second run came off a single to center field by Michael Lagier and he scored in Tyler Stofiel in the second inning.

The Gators added a run in the bottom of the second and two more runs in the third to take the lead 2-3. It would take the Wildcats until the fifth inning to tie the game when Dustin Miller singled in Alex DeVito.

The pesky Gators answered back with one run in the sixth inning and one in the seventh inning and took a 3-5 lead.

The Wildcats were able to make up one of those runs in the eighth inning after an RBI single by Miller scored in Cody Wissler.

The Wildcats were held scoreless in the top of the night and the result was a 4-5 Chico State loss.

Game two:

Game two was announced for seven innings due to weather concerns and was again a game were Chico State was the guest team in their home stadium.

The Wildcats began the game scoring in the top of the first inning again, this time to a tune of four runs. The Gators answered with two of their own in the bottom of the first and the scoring just kept going from there.

Chico State added two more runs off of RBI singles by Miller and Olson in the second inning. The Gators, like they have been doing all night, responded with a double to score two runs.

The fourth inning is when momentum swung the Gators way when Harley Lopez smacked a three-run home run off of Chico State’s Sid Lacy. Another run in the fourth, off a double, put the Wildcats behind 6-10.

Chico would not give up, even after another home run was given up and scored in two runs for SF State.

In the sixth inning, the Wildcats exploded for three runs in their comeback attempt. Eddie Zavala, DeVito and Miller all had base hits that produced an RBI each. That would, however, be the end of their scoring as they were held scoreless for the final inning.

After seven innings the result was a 9-10 Chico State loss.

After a rough weekend, made rougher with rain delays, the Wildcats will stay at home for a four-game series against Cal State Monterey Bay. The first of those games is on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
