The pros and woes of pet ownership

I think most people at some point have thought about getting a pet.

I certainly have and I did.

I got a puppy over Christmas break and it was one of the happiest moments in my life.

Until I realized how much work he is.

Having a pet is like having a child, no lie.

They constantly need attention and so much money goes into their care.

There were times where my puppy would give me heart attacks. Bambi would swallow things he wasn’t suppose to and I thought he was going to die.

It made me realize that I have a life in my hands. It was up to me to provide for him and make sure he was ok.

It’s a huge responsibility to take on.

I don’t think most college students realize that.

Most rush into getting a pet because they think it’s cool or are in need of a companion but don’t stop to think about all the care pets need.

I rushed into getting a pet because I thought I was ready but I didn’t consider these things beforehand:

  • Pets require time and energy
  • I don’t necessarily have the best home for a pet
  • I could barely feed myself what made me think I could provide for a dog as well
  • Who would take care of my dog when I’m at school or at work?

I was lucky enough that my parents told me that they could take care of Bambi until I was ready but not many other people could say the same.

So think carefully about getting a pet.

It’s a huge decision to make.

A pet deserves someone that can take care of it.

Even goldfish.
