Game 1

Chico State got off to a hot start in their four game weekend series against the Humboldt State Lumberjacks.

The Wildcats won the first game by way of the mercy rule. The umpire stopped the game in the fifth inning with an ending score of 8-0.

Senior third baseman Courtney Brown led the way for Chico State recording three hits and two runs. Junior outfielder Alli Cook and sophomore catcher Tori Zimmerman both registered two hits. Cook scored two runs while Zimmerman scored one.

Chico State opened up the scoring in the 2rd inning scoring three runs.

Then in the fourth inning the Wildcats put up four more runs extending their lead to seven.

With the Lumberjacks’ backs against the wall they attempted a comeback, but stellar pitching by freshman pitcher Haley Gilham shut them out. Gilham went the distance, recording two strikes outs and giving up one hit.

Brown sealed the deal for the Wildcats by hitting a solo homerun to left center in the bottom of the fifth. It forced the umpire to call the game because of the mercy rule.

This is the second time this season Chico State has been on the winning side of the mercy rule.

Game 2

Humboldt State stole Chico State’s Friday night sweep.

Even though the Wildcats doubled the Lumberjacks’ hits, six to three, Chico State still lost 2-3.

Six different Wildcats recorded hits in the second game of the Friday double header.

It was Chico State that opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third by scoring two runs. However, this would be it for the Wildcats.

Humboldt State scored all three of their runs in the top of the sixth inning.

A single and a homer gave the Lumberjacks a one run lead. This proved to be enough for them as they held of the Wildcat offense for the remainder of the game.

Junior pitcher Brooke Langeloh went the distance for Chico State, so too did junior Katie Obbema for Humboldt State.

Chico State moves to 16-14 in CCAA play and 23-17 overall. Humboldt State ties Cal State Monterey Bay with a 23-7 league record. The Lumberjacks move to 37-11 on the year.
