Six bills lay on the California governor’s desk, waiting to be signed.
These bills would raise California’s legal age for smoking, dipping, chewing, and vaping tobacco from 18 to 21. The bills were sent Friday after a six-week delay.
Ricardo Cuevas is the manger of the tobacco and smoke shop Too Hot Glass. It’s been open in Chico for a over a year. Cuevas explained even if the laws pass, it won’t hurt his business very much.
“They’ll find other ways of getting around the law,” Cuevas said. “They’ll probably just ask their friends to buy it for them. This law won’t change much here.”
Gov. Jerry Brown has until May 4 to sign, veto or send the bills back to the Legislature.
Opponents against this law would need over 366,000 signatures before November if Brown signs the bills.
