The Chico State’s women’s softball team swept Cal State Stanislaus Friday Night.

Game 1

Chico State won their first of a double header in a nail biting finish.

The ‘Cats escaped the Warriors’ attack in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 3-2 win.

The Warriors opened the scoring early in the second inning. Sophomore outfielder Nicolette Vizcaino doubled allowing sophomore infielder Kailene Begonia to run in from second.

Chico State Wildcats responded in the 4th inning with a home run by senior infielder Emily McEnaney.

After four innings the score was tied at one a piece.

The breakthrough for Chico State came in the top of the 6th inning. Junior Desiree’ Gonzalez–who plays first base–hit a two run homer giving the ‘Cats a 3-1 lead in the top of the 6th.

However, in the following inning Cal State Stanislaus answered with a single from Morgan Balestreri giving Jessica Varady the chance to score from second.

The Wildcats received a scare in the bottom of the 7th. The Stanislaus Warriors had two runners in scoring position with only 1 out, but with the help of ace pitching, the ‘Cats escaped with the win.

Game 2

The ‘Cats defeat the Warriors in a high scoring game two of the double header.

Cal State Stanislaus opened up the scoring early in the second game again. Vizcaino scored her second run of the night after sophomore outfielder Cassidy Duke singled to ground out.

This early run would be the only time the Warriors score.

The ‘Cats responded quickly in the top of the 2nd inning. Gonzalez opened up the scoring, and junior outfielder Amanda Cordeiro followed suit giving Chico State a 2-1 lead.

After the 2nd inning Chico State led 2-1.

The Chico State offense began their onslaught in the third inning scoring four runs.

McEnaney scored in after Gonzalez is walked. Senior Courtney Brown–who plays third base–drove in two after hitting a double to center.

Finally, to cap off a wild inning Cordeiro rushed home after a wild pitch. Chico State led 6-1 after three innings.

In the top of the fourth the Wildcats struck again, driving in three runs.

Sophomore pitcher Tori Zimmerman scored first by stealing home.

Senior infielder Kelli Keefe doubled to left center allowing Cordeiro and McEnaney to extend the lead to 9-1.

The Wildcats did not relent, and tacked on three more runs in the 5th inning.

The game was called at the end of the fifth inning with a final score of 12-1, Chico State over Cal State Stanislaus.

The Wildcats improved to 10-4 while the Warriors drop to 9-13.
