Leave the party school reputation behind

Many people know that Chico State was once considered the No. 1 party school in America in a ranking by Playboy magazine in 1986.

What some may not realize is that students today are still trying to make Chico State the No. 1 party school.

I’m not sure this is the greatest idea.

For one, what would future employers think of people with degrees from Chico State? That students earned a degree in blacking out or getting high? I don’t think many students realize the damage a party school reputation does.

When people ask what school I go to, and I say Chico State, one of the first things they always say is: “Oh, the party school?”

It’s not something to be proud of. Chico State has so many great qualities and accomplishments, but they are often overshadowed by this reputation.

I get it though — it’s college.

It’s the time of one’s life, but is it worth jeopardizing what students came to school for?

I’m not saying students shouldn’t party. Hell, even I party.

It’s necessary after a long week of classes and work, but there’s a difference between partying and being the No. 1 party school.

Chico State hasn’t been ranked as the top party school in years, but people are still burning couches, getting stabbed — killed even. Just imagine how much crazier things would get if it were.

There have been rumors going around that I’m Shmacked, a company that throws parties around college campuses, is coming to Chico State.

At first, like many others, I was excited. The YouTube videos give the impression that people will have the time of their lives — that this is what college is all about.

But it isn’t.

College isn’t about partying. It’s about getting an education to better oneself.

I’m not paying thousands of dollars just to party.

After looking up I’m Shmacked and how it affected other campuses, I asked myself if this is something that Chico State needs right now?

Chico State already has a bad reputation as it is, with all the stabbings and accidents that have been occurring due to out of control parties. I don’t think it needs a major event hosted by I’m Shmacked to further taint our school’s reputation.

I’m not trying to be a party pooper. I am all for partying, but when parties become out of control and unsafe something needs to be done about it.

I came to Chico State to get a degree. I don’t need a party school reputation to further decrease my chances of getting a job.

It’s OK to party — almost every college does. But remember the real reason why we’re here.

Attending Chico State is a privilege. Chico is a beautiful town. Let’s not ruin that.

Party on, Chico.

But for the love of God, be safe about it and take care of this town and the people in it.
