Chico State’s women soccer team won their first game of the season against the Cal Baptist University Lancers on Sept. 1. They won 2-1 after scoring in double overtime.

The Lancers took the lead late in the first half. Cal Baptist has less control of the ball throughout the game; they took five shots compared to the ‘Cats seven shots. Chico State’s aggressive play got them the ball early, and it also hurt the team and resulted in four off side calls and three fouls in the first half.

Chico State’s first year goal keeper Caitlyn Duval carried the team’s defense by earning two saves in the first half. Duval accumulated six saves total. She was a key player and helped tie the game for the ‘Cats.

First year forward Brielynn Tovani scored the first unassisted goal of the season for the Wildcats and of her collegiate career. Tovani’s goal tied the game with just 12 minutes remaining in the second half.

Chico State’s team took 16 shots throughout the game. The aggressive offensive tactic was matched by the Lancers. They took eight shots on goal and 17 shots total.

The game extended into a double overtime, but neither team was able to make use of the additional 20 minutes. The ‘Cats relied on their dominant offense through out the overtime period; they took six shots compared to the Lancers who took two.

Fouls plagued the Wildcats throughout the game. They were called off sides a total of six times, were given five fouls and gave up two corner kicks. Chico State was able to overcome their foul trouble by relying on their goalie and defenders.

While Cal Baptist had the advantage with corner kicks and off side calls, they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.

The offensive barrage by Chico State paid off; sophomore defender Korie Bozart was able to score at the 108 minute mark unassisted to end the game.

The ‘Cats will have their next game on Sept. 3, against the Azusa Pacific University Cougars, on the Cougars home field.
