Chico State scored a goal with four minutes remaining and propelled themselves to a 1-0 win over the Seattle Pacific Falcons on Sept. 7. The win brought the ‘Cats overall record to 2-0-1 for the season.

Senior forward Shelby Lanksbury scored the winning goal of the game. It was her first of the season and the eighth of her college career. Lanksbury scored the goal off an assist by senior midfielder Lindsey Dias, who earned her first assist of the season, and 10th of her college career.

Both teams played aggressively but ran into foul trouble late in the game. Seattle Pacific earned the first yellow card of the game in the second half. The penalty was issued after the Falcons performed an illegal slide tackle.

The ‘Cats retaliated for the play just 15 seconds later. Junior forward Pooja Patel earned a yellow card for an illegal tackle. Chico State only has one yellow card this season, but had seven last season.

The ‘Cats played a strong offense in the game, by shooting 12 shots compared to the Falcon’s six. Chico State did not make a save in the game, but forced Seattle Pacific to make seven.

The Falcons were unable to take high quality shots and did not have a shot on goal during the game. Chico State’s virulent offense allowed them to take eight shots on goal.

The ‘Cats offensive effort was lead by Lanksbury, and sophomore forward Carlie Reader, who each had four shots in the game with three on goal. They were able to remain in control of the ball for the majority of the game, with Chico State’s forwards leading the way.

Chico State returns to the field on Sept. 9 on the ‘Cats home field against the Holy Names University Hawks.
