The Butte County Bomb Squad was called to the Chico Police Department Tuesday afternoon after a man brought a suspicious package to the building.

“They brought it to the lobby to turn it over to us, so we said ‘No,’ put it on the trunk and then we activated EOD to come make sure it was inert,” said Lt. Dave Britt of Chico Police.

The bomb squad analyzed the device in the parking lot of the building. After running tests, the device did not contain explosive material, Britt said.

“We don’t know the actual substance yet,” he said. “We’ve determined it’s not hazardous, but it was made to look like an explosive device.

Humboldt street was closed until 4:30 p.m. when the area was cleared.
