The life of Ted Herrera, a professor of nutrition and food science, will be celebrated with a service on March 2.

Herrera passed away on Feb. 2 at the age of 67, according to an announcement from University Communications. The memorial service will be held at Colusa Hall, Room 100B from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Herrera began teaching at the university in 2013. Partnered with his wife Maria, Herrera created the “Science of Food” course where he was able to share his knowledge of food science and culinary arts with students.

“He loved to share all the different experiences he had in the food science world,” stated colleague Nancy Anderson in the release. “He had a big personality and an equally big heart for his students.”

Professor Herrera was also an active mentor and was always eager to help students gain employment in the food industry after graduation.

“I’ll never forget all the valuable things he taught me,” said graduate student Veronica VanCleave. “Ted’s spirit will continue to shine through the many, many lives he touched.”

In his honor, the university flag will be lowered Monday.
